Protect Your Car from Singapore’s Sun

UV Index 12+ Every Day — Your Paint Is Under Constant Attack

Singapore Has the World’s Most Intense UV

At just 1.3° from the equator, Singapore receives near-maximum UV radiation 365 days a year:

  • UV Index 12+ daily — the highest on the WHO scale (classified as “extreme”)
  • No seasonal relief — unlike temperate countries, there’s no winter break for your paint
  • 10+ hours of strong UV — from 8am to 6pm, your outdoor-parked car absorbs relentless radiation
  • Even cloudy days — up to 80% of UV penetrates cloud cover in Singapore

What UV Does to Your Car

Stage 1: Gloss Loss (3–6 months)

UV breaks down the clear coat’s molecular structure. The surface becomes microscopically rough, scattering light instead of reflecting it. Your car looks less shiny than when new.

Stage 2: Fading (6–18 months)

UV penetrates the weakened clear coat and attacks the paint pigments underneath. Red, black, and dark colours fade most noticeably. The paint looks dull and washed out.

Stage 3: Oxidation (1–3 years)

The clear coat breaks down completely in areas of heaviest exposure (roof, bonnet, boot). Paint becomes chalky to the touch — a powdery white residue appears on darker colours. This stage requires professional correction to reverse.

Stage 4: Clear Coat Failure (3–5+ years)

The clear coat peels or cracks. At this point, the only fix is a full respray — $2,000–$8,000+ depending on the car. This is what Singapore sun does to unprotected paint.

5 Ways to Protect Your Car from UV

  1. Glass coating (most effective) — KeePer’s glass-resin layer blocks UV from reaching your clear coat. Like sunscreen for your car — but you apply it once every 1–3 years instead of daily. From SGD 178
  2. Sheltered parking — park in covered car parks when possible. Even partial shade helps
  3. Car cover — good for long-term outdoor storage, impractical for daily use
  4. Regular washing — removes contaminants that accelerate UV damage
  5. Avoid waxing alone — wax melts in Singapore heat within 2–4 weeks. Coating is permanent
🛡️ Coating is the only practical daily UV protection. You can’t always park in shade, and wax doesn’t survive Singapore heat. A coating applied once every 1–3 years provides continuous UV blocking without daily effort.

FAQ

Does window tinting protect car paint from UV?
Window tinting protects the interior (dashboard, seats, passengers) from UV — not the exterior paint. Paint protection requires exterior coating. The ideal setup: tinting for interior protection + coating for exterior protection.
Is Singapore UV worse than Australia or the Middle East?
Singapore’s peak UV index is comparable (~12+), but what makes Singapore uniquely harsh is the consistency — extreme UV every single day, year-round, with no seasonal relief. In Australia, UV varies by season. In the Middle East, low humidity somewhat reduces the oxidation effect. Singapore combines extreme UV with extreme humidity — the worst combination for car paint.
