Did you know? The culprit of white rust is “aluminum white rust” caused by alkaline rain.
The metal moldings on the window frames of European cars such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, and VW are made of “aluminum alloy”. (Most non-European cars are plated). The surface of this aluminum alloy is anodized to prevent rust and is very resistant to the acid rain that falls in Europe. However, in areas where there are high levels of silicate minerals suspended in the air, the nature of the rain tends to become alkaline, causing the aluminum alloy moldings on European cars to rust white.
Once this white rust appears on the window frames, it becomes difficult to remove, and many people choose to replace the metal moldings on the frames.
